My music: I LOVED these guys ..

Three Dog Night. They were my favourite performers over those two so-long-ago decades, I think.

I didn’t even find out for – oh, years that the group’s name was an Australian Aboriginal ‘story’. But I was really mad about them: they were so .. so .. well, as Tim Minchin sang<*> not all that many years ago, “{They were} so fuckin’ ROCK” !

First offering is one that a brilliant (musical) knitting teacher whose blog I follow, PDX Knitterati, should like very much. If you perchance read this, Michele, you’ll know why I say so. [grin] It was, I read, a Beatles song, well-known for a cover version by Cilla Black. But this cover version knocks spots off anything else; and Cilla’s kind of .. faded.

Second offering was their second-biggest hit. If anyone reading this post is remotely my vintage you should remember it: it was everywhere !   :)

And the third and last song is my absolute favourite in all their huge catalogue of cover versions of songs. So strange, that: Three Dog Night never wrote a single song, but the covers they performed were very frequently better than the original versions.

Jesus, they were good ..

<*>and for those who might be Tim Minchin fans, here’s that one performed – not that it has anything to do with the ’60s and ’70s, of course !

Have finally found home: in my ... ahh ... later years. With no family within coo-ee and no assets, I'm in a wonderful and totally independent unit within the auspices of a celebrated aged care organization. Idea is that I have two 'houses' I can move into were I to become cerebrally challenged: but it's my firm intention not to. :D P.S. I have no idea how I got to this number of years: I was young only last week ..

  1. This was definitely a favorite group of mine, as well, M-R. I loved them then, and still listen to them as one of my “oldie” stations plays them often. I typically laugh when I speak of my oldie station. I remember when that meant my parents’ music, NOT mine. But it’s fun to look back and remember how much the music moved us then, and I think still speaks to us and keeps us young in spirit. I sure didn’t know a thing about their name. Good information. :-)

    1. That’s super, beautiful Debra – super to know there is a really like mind out there, and one who ‘corresponds’ with me. XO
I don’t know what it was about TDN; but they lasted – that is, the two of them (less Chuck Negron) for years and years, until Corey died in 2015. Jesus, what a run ! Danny Hutton must be awful lonely, these days.
“What is the definition of Three Dog Night?
It is said to be a phrase used by Australian Aborigines, meaning “a night so cold you will need to take three dogs to bed with you to stay warm”. It is also the name of a famous band of the late 60s.”
They forgot to add AND THE ’70S !
Did you have a favourite song of theirs ?

  2. I loved Three Dog Night too. One of my favorites growing up. Sang “Joy to the World” all the time. Had all of their records. Makes me wonder why I don’t have one single CD of theirs now. May have to rectify…

    1. They were the only group I knew of that was so successful while not penning a single song. I don’t know who in their backing group did the cover arrangements (Jimmy Greenspoon maybe ?), but the arrangements were about as good as writing their own songs. :)
