  1. I know nothing about Australian politics or government, but it seems to me that the original inhabitants of Australia should certainly be considered citizens and therefore included in the constitution. But no doubt the issue is far more complex than my feeble understanding.

    • Oh, they are, Colorado ! And yes, the issue is truly complex.
As for your feeble understanding: it’s one that requires much background reading, and I don’t blame you for a lack of enthusiasm for undertaking same . 🙂

        • In which case I congratulate you for perseverance, if not for comprehension. [grin]
It’s not the same as Native Americans – about whose problems/whatever I would have absolutely zero understanding !

            • The reason it isn’t is that our First Nation already has a great deal of moolah spent on it, and also already has a great deal of representation. But one really important thing is that there are so many tribes and so many languages and by no means do they all even want the Voice: one bright young feller says that it puts them on a begging footing even opening the topic, for instance !

      • Herewith response from most trusted bloke (who sent it to me):
“His Secretary said he just invited anyone interested to hear his views at the West Coast Community Centre. Fred Chaney was in the audience.”
We’re sort of lucky to be able to read this !! 🙂

  3. I don’t expect you to change your mind M-R – but I differ. I am aware of the No argument, however the Voice to Parliament is a start. I understand many of our First Nations people want a treaty, which I heartily support, and this can be worked out once the Voice is enshrined in our constitution. For now, let’s get this first step underway.

    • This is the best aspect of blogging, Sue – that people can state their opinions and not have them shouted down ! 🙂
Yes, there’s more support for a treaty than for the voice. I can’t help but wonder what are the political problems with a treaty ..
Whenever there’s something to be formally voted on coming up, I avoid watching any news on my laptop, because the shouting down is all around ! 😦

  4. I don’t remember if it was Obama who said something along the lines of “Okay, so the bus is not going as far as you want it to go but if you want to get there you have to get on the bus.” but whether it was or if it was someone else, it has stuck with me. The Voice is not perfect but we will never get to a better place if you don’t get on the bus. And The Voice is that bus. I will be getting on the bus because I just can’t stay in this place.

    • No, I know: you’re not a quietly contented person, in spite of everything you’ve achieved.
I think your hikes are like my moves, darlin – there’s definitely something going on there.
Your quote – whether or not from my political hero – is certainly relevant to current thinking about the Voice, and you’re far from being a solitary passenger. But that fact seems, to me, to make it not applicable to you; for you are someone to whom solitude is a balm ..
