It pays to be tenacious !

This-morning, having bitten the bullet savagely, I wrote a polite email of cancellation to Community Housing and Horizon Housing Realty (in truth the one company) regarding their having awarded me a studio to live in.

This I did because I had to admit that the studio was simply too small to spend any amount of time living in: as Paula said, the plan makes it look more like a bedsit than a studio. Besides, I would’ve had to get rid of all my larger belongings; and I reckon I’m pared already down to the minimum.

Just after I’d begun advising various companies about cancelling arrangements I’d made, CHL came back to me with

AN OFFER I COULDN’T POSSIBLY REFUSE AND WOULDN’T IN A MILLION YEARS

which is ..

a 1-bedroom apartment facing east, on probably the 4th level, as a Victorian Housing applicant !!!!

This means paying 25% of any income, plus the rent assistance items of my pension.

They hadn’t known me to be on the Victorian Housing Register: I hadn’t told them as I had no idea it was relevant to anything. I’d just gone on sending many MR-type emails and making myself .. erhmm .. known to them; so that they didn’t have to be reminded of me when the whole VHR aspect was raised.

  1. Wowee … this is wunderbar MR. And you don’t have to worry about your sister’s reaction. She’ll be thrilled for you. You are right, it does pay – usually – to be tenacious. When will it be ready? I’m thrilled to bits for you, and I do hope it will be the final move.

    • Isn’t it ? – isn’t it just, Michele ? I’m beside myself with joy about it: can scarcely believe it’s happening. I check out which one they’ve allocated me around 1pm Friday, and will take some pics and post about it. Just in case the 3,947,123 photos on the site already aren’t enough. [grin] Thank-you, my small and very talented friend !

  2. What a wonderful development, M-R. This sounds just perfect for you and I love the background on the circumstances that contributed to this opportunity. Sometimes life hands us a big surprise! 😍

    • Oh, how I agree, Debra my lamb !! To add to that wonderful occurrence was an SMS I received yesterday informing me that my TERRIBLY-missed friend Diana, who died not so long ago, has left me what is to me a huge amount in her will. I am speechless ..

    • Isn’t it almost unbelievable ??? I saw the little apartment on Friday, and it’s almost totally perfect. The ‘almost’ is due to no dishwasher and no carpet. Seems we Victorian Housing Register applicants need to be reminded that we’re second-rate citizens – but hey, do I care ? I do not. I am happy and grateful. Moving on Tuesday week, 13th.
A shitload more to come: stand by .. Many hugs !

  3. I’m so happy for you and the Boodster! I can’t imagine living in a studio apartment, but that sounded more like a closet. Can’t wait to see photos after you’ve moved in and are sitting on the patio with a cup of tea in hand and a smile on your face.

    • Boodie will have a whole balcony to live in, if he wants. I shall put his litter-box out there AND the special ‘walk the bits off on this’ mat that now accompanies it. Oh, Mary-Jean, it’s so terrific, all this. And the Community Housing people are so nice, honestly !! I shall be posting a lot about it, because it’s one of the best things to happen to me.

  4. Sure did. Am now ensconced in the best place I’ve had since leaving Sydney in 2016. Oh my ! – was it that long ago since I last had truck with my beloved GP, Uttam, and my beloved dentist, John ..? – the two people I miss most from the Emerald City, not counting my oldest friend, the inimitable and wonderful Goanna ..

    • I’ve been waiting for a post all about your new digs, all the while assuming you are very busy with all the details of moving and settling in. But I see from this comment that you finally made it and sound quite happy with the place. So happy for you!

      • I’ve been eking out the limited energy, Colorado; and today, would you believe ?, I finally managed to put away my new pantry contents, swap the Breville Barista Express to a much better spot (but it does require a cable across the floor: still, I’m buying one of the cable-covers for it), unpack all my newly-purchased kitchen items, position them, and even take the TONS of packaging down to the garbage room !!

This means that very shortly I can take some photos and then post.

You should live so long. XO

        • Moving is one of life’s most exhausting tasks and I swore once I landed here that I’d never move again. Glad you are pacing yourself. Be VERY careful with that cable across the floor. It doesn’t take much at all to trip a person.

          • Because (as always) we totally agree, I used a white cable so that it sticks our like dogs’ balls. Oh, sorry – vulgar Aussie saying.

            😀
